Step Two · Optimize

To get the most out of your fiber connection, follow these six pro-tips for your router setup.

1

Hardwire as many devices as possible

Connect high-demand devices — gaming consoles, work-from-home setups, and streaming TVs — directly to your router using an Ethernet cable. This provides the most stable and fastest connection possible, and helps ease the crowded WiFi spectrum at Belle Monet. The living room, kitchen, and each bedroom have an ethernet port that you can use to hardwire devices. If there are any ports in your home that don't work, reach out and we'll help you.

2

Use 5GHz on every possible device

If you can't hardwire a device, make sure it is connected to the 5GHz band of your router.

3

Avoid 2.4GHz

The 2.4GHz spectrum in densely populated areas can be extremely slow and cause lots of buffering and waiting. The only devices that should connect to 2.4GHz are the devices that cannot "see" 5GHz. These are usually IoT (smart home devices) — smart plugs, light bulbs, thermostats, robot vacuums, etc.

4

Update your router's firmware

Routers with out-of-date firmware can display performance and stability issues, so it's important to keep yours up to date. Check for updates in your router's app to ensure peak security and performance.

5

Wire your mesh system

If you use a WiFi mesh system with multiple nodes instead of a standalone router, it is critical that your mesh nodes are wired together via Ethernet cables — and not meshing over WiFi. This significantly boosts the speed of the mesh system. We are happy to come assist you with this, just reach out.

6

Never use a wireless extender

We can't emphasize this enough. The WiFi spectrum in high-density areas like Belle Monet is extremely limited, so WiFi extenders always do more harm than good — for both yourself and your neighbors. Unplug that thang!
